She was my protector, my loyal friend, nana dog to my girls, well loved family member, and the longest commitment I had ever made to another living being. My constant in my everchanging landscape that was my 20s.
She entered my life while walking my Rowdy dog one morning in 95. She was nothing but a handful of puppy who had escaped from a badly fenced yard of some stoners down the street from my house in Austin. Rowdy tried to eat her as he did with all dogs so I knew I couldn't keep her.
I could barely keep my own head above water in the days of pink hair, cranial accessories, and slackerdom so I gave her to my friend Julian next door. After three weeks of puppy pee and chewed shoes he gave her back and that was that. She was mine. Julian named her Norman which I then had to forever explain after people met the female dog named Norman.
After 13 years of loyalty, love, and high energy she began a fast rate of decline in her health when she was diagnosed with Cushings disease in April and a tumor on her liver took over her final days. It was a fast exit and we all miss her.
She was an excellent pal.
