Today I had the opportunity to help out a friend of mine from the Artist Mothers Group I belong to. She is a weaver and art teacher at a local synagogue preschool. She is currently teaching a fiber unit and showing the children everything from quilting to weaving. Today's lesson focused on where the yarn comes from (in this case, sheep) for their homemade looms. The children were wonderful and interested. Lots of 3 and 4 year olds who knew of the spinning wheel as a dangerous instrument that enslaved one princess and put another to sleep until her prince could rescue her... now had a chance to see the beauty of the device in motion making yarn which they were then able to weave on a small loom with their teacher. The teacher read to them about the process of growing, shearing, washing, dyeing, carding and spinning... A pleasant morning sharing my craft with others.
